ReGen III is a cleantech company commercializing a portfolio of patented technologies to upcycle used motor oil into premium Group III base oils. This is the high-performance lubricant grade on which modern engine specifications depend. With North America importing 70–80% of its Group III supply from Asia and the Middle East.

The Situation
ReGen III held a genuinely differentiated technology position which was a patented, pilot-validated process capable of producing Group III base oil from used motor oil at yields and quality specifications that major oil companies, blenders and consultants had independently described as best-in-class. The commercial backdrop was compelling: North America’s structural dependence on imported Group III, combined with growing regulatory and supply chain pressure to develop domestic circular alternatives, created a clear opening for a well-capitalized domestic producer.
The challenge was not the technology. It was credibility and execution capacity. Early-stage cleantech companies with strong IP but thin institutional pedigree face a well-known investor skepticism gap. The narrative needs to be sharp, the governance needs to be credible, and the management team needs to match the scale of the commercial ambition. When Blue Deer got involved in 2020, ReGen III needed help closing that gap.
What Blue Deer Did
Blue Deer engaged as a capital and governance partner beginning in 2020, taking a board seat and working alongside management to sharpen the investor narrative, build institutional-grade materials, and execute targeted capital outreach to family offices and strategic investors whose time horizon and risk orientation matched the company’s development stage.
A central part of the engagement was upgrading the management team to match the scale of the commercial opportunity. Blue Deer supported the identification and recruitment of three senior executives who materially raised ReGen III’s credibility with institutional capital: Tony Weatherill as CEO and President, a 30-year veteran of the global lubricants industry, most recently SVP Commercial at H.F. Sinclair and President of Petro-Canada Lubricants; Brad Kotush as CFO, formerly EVP and CFO of Home Capital Group and previously CFO of Canaccord Genuity; and Kirk McNamara as Chief Commercial Officer, formerly Director of Base Oils at Motiva Enterprises, a Saudi Aramco-affiliated refiner, bringing deep commercial relationships across the base oil value chain.
Blue Deer’s board participation provided ongoing governance continuity and strategic input as the company navigated capital raises, technology validation milestones, and the commercial engagement necessary to advance toward project financing and offtake.
The Outcome
ReGen III has raised over $25 million in capital since Blue Deer’s engagement began, and has advanced from early-stage technology company to a commercially credible platform with a strengthened executive team, a growing offtake portfolio, active engagement with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office, and partnerships with world-class engineering and construction firms including Koch Project Solutions and PCL Industrial. The management upgrades Blue Deer supported have positioned the company to execute on a commercial strategy that extends into emerging markets including potential AI data centre immersion cooling fluids that amplify the value of its Group III product quality.
